The Shelly 1PM Mini Gen4 micromodule controls a circuit up to 8 A and measures its power consumption in real time. Multi-protocol Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Bluetooth and Matter, it integrates locally with Home Assistant, without cloud or hub.
On paper, the Shelly 1PM Mini Gen4 ticks all the boxes of the perfect micromodule for a Home Assistant setup. It fits inside a flush-mount box behind a switch or outlet, it controls a circuit up to 8 A, and most importantly it measures power consumption in real time with stated accuracy around 1%. The real novelty of this Gen4 is the multi-protocol side: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee and Matter in the same red casing. Practically speaking, you're no longer locked into a single ecosystem, and that changes the game quite a bit for the longevity of your setup.
On the Home Assistant side, one point needs to be clear that many overlook: the best route remains the native Shelly integration, over Wi-Fi via the local API (RPC), without going through the cloud. Auto-discovery, 100% local control, and above all it brings everything back: the switch AND the power, voltage, current, energy. It's clean, it's stable, it's exactly what we expect. The trap is the Zigbee mode: yes it works via ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT, but today only the relay is properly exposed, and the consumption measurement comes through poorly or not at all. In other words, if you switch to Zigbee, you lose a good portion of the interest of the "PM". My advice: for this specific module, stick with Wi-Fi with the Shelly integration, or Matter if you really want to get away from Wi-Fi, but keep in mind that Matter and Zigbee are mutually exclusive and the button switch was a bit temperamental at launch (fixed through firmware updates).
The other limitations need to be known before buying. The 8 A reserve it for lighting and small appliances: to control heavy stuff like a water heater, you need to aim for the standard 1PM Gen4 or a Pro module. It also needs neutral, so no miracles in old installations without neutral at the switch. Finally, in detached mode, the state of the physical input is not reported via Matter, which complicates controlling connected bulbs in certain configurations. Nothing disqualifying, but worth knowing.
Against the competition, the Sonoff MINI remains the usual Wi-Fi alternative, but few modules combine power consumption measurement, multi-protocol and open local control at this price point for around twenty euros. If you don't need consumption monitoring, its little brother the Shelly 1 Mini Gen4 (dry contact) does the job for less. In the end, at this price, with native local support in HA and rare protocol flexibility, the Shelly 1PM Mini Gen4 deserves a solid 4.5/5. It loses its half-point on the immaturity of consumption measurement in Zigbee and the 8 A ceiling, but it's clearly a safe bet for equipping a connected home room by room.
