Howmation's review

Tested in real conditions

The Shelly 2PM Gen4 is a bit like the Swiss Army knife of embedded home automation. On paper and in the field, it does two things very well: control two separate loads (two light points, two appliances) with a per-channel power consumption measurement, or control a bidirectional roller shutter, blind or awning motor. And where Gen4 really sets itself apart from Gen3 is the move to a more powerful MCU with more RAM, which translates to better responsiveness and embedded scripting capabilities. The shutter functionality is solid: calibration, percentage-based position control, obstacle detection, and even blade tilt control for venetian blinds.

On the Home Assistant side, we're clearly in premium territory, and that's why we give it such a high score. The native Shelly integration detects it automatically, runs on Local Push (the RPC protocol via WebSocket) and requires no communication through the Shelly cloud. Everything stays local, you get each channel as a separate entity, you have power sensors, and for more advanced integrators there's the HTTP API, MQTT(S), webhooks and scripts. Honestly, for a local-first HA setup, this is exactly what you want. You can also switch the module to Zigbee (ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT) or leave it on Matter, but watch out: it's one OR the other, the switch happens via firmware (5 button presses). And a useful reminder: Matter here runs over Wi-Fi, not Thread. The module is not a Thread router, despite what you might read here and there.

Now the weak points, because a 100% glowing review doesn't help anyone. The terminal blocks are really small: once you need to double neutral wires in a crowded junction box, you end up with Wago connectors and the module's space-saving advantage takes a hit. The exclusive Zigbee/Matter choice can also frustrate those hoping to juggle between the two. Against a Sonoff DualR3, the Shelly remains more compact and especially better equipped on the open ecosystem and software support front, even if the Sonoff has the advantage of a DIN rail format on some versions. And compared to its own predecessor the Shelly Plus 2PM Gen3, the real added value of Gen4 lies in native multi-protocol support (Zigbee + Matter without a hub) more than in a leap in features.

In the end, especially for its price, the Shelly 2PM Gen4 deserves its 4.5/5 rating. It's a reliable, open module, perfectly at home in Home Assistant, with energy measurement and roller shutter control in a single enclosure. It loses half a point on the stingy terminal blocks and on the 'multi-protocol' side being a bit oversold when you look closely. But for equipping a home locally without relying on a cloud, it's one of the best options on the market.
